The Scriptures reveal that the King is always speaking to His children, but hearing Him requires a heart that has been trained to distinguish His truth from the chaotic frequencies of the world. When we pull away to listen, we find that His voice does not bring panic or confusion, but the absolute clarity of divine direction.
In John chapter ten. Jesus uses the natural imagery of a shepherd and his sheep to explain how His followers interact with Him. Verse four contains a profound promise: the sheep follow the shepherd because they know his voice. In the ancient Near East, multiple flocks were often kept in the same community pen overnight. In the morning, each shepherd would step outside and give a unique, distinct call. Despite the commotion of hundreds of animals, the sheep would separate themselves and follow only their specific shephard because they were deeply familiar with the unique sound of his cry.
What does the Word teach us about recognizing this voice? It shows us that spiritual familiarity is built through consistent time spent together. You cannot expect to clearly discern the whispers of the Holy Spirit in a crisis if you never listen to Him in the quiet. In our modern lives, we are constantly bombarded by competing voices; the loud opinions of critics, the persistent demands of our responsibilities, and the internal noise of our own anxieties, griefs, or heartaches. But the Word reveals that the Savior does not shout to compete with the world. He speaks in a still, small voice that demands our full attention. When you disconnect from the external clutter and open the Scriptures you are tuning your spiritual ears to the correct frequency. You learn the tone of His grace, the rhythm of His peace, and the boundaries of His truth.
Notice also the order of movement in the text: He goeth before them, and the sheep follow him. The Shepherd never drives His sheep from behind with a whip; He leads them from the front by the sound of His voice. This means that if you are truly following Jesus, you never have to walk into an unknown territory or a heavy trial alone. He has already stepped into tomorrow before you get there. Right living on this scriptural truth means relaxing your grip on the future and focusing entirely on the instruction for today. When sudden life’s circumstances try to dictate your steps, you must refuse to follow the voice of panic. Instead, drop to your knees, open the Word, and listen for the Rhema direction of the King. His voice will always align with His written Word, and it will always lead you out of confusion and into a plain path of righteousness.
Stewardship of this phase of means deliberately filtering what you allow into your mind. If you spend all day listening to the bad news of the world or the complaints of a heavy environment, your spiritual ears will become dulled. As a True Gem and a child of the Most High, you must protect your ear-gate. Make the Secret Place your daily filter. Let the voice of Jesus be the first thing that frames your thoughts in the morning and the final truth that settles your heart at night. Stand firmly on the text of Scripture today, trust that your Shepherd is leading you with absolute precision, and walk forward with the confidence that you belong to Him, and you know exactly how to follow His lead.
