The Power of Obedience, Part 5: The Eternal Fruit &; Legacy of Faith

Scripture Focus: Genesis 15:6 & James 2:22–24

Genesis 15:6 & James 2:22–24 (KJV)

Genesis 15:6: And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

James 2:22–24: Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

Genesis 15:6 & James 2:22–24 (NIV)

Genesis 15:6: Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

James 2:22–24: You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.

Genesis 15:6 & James 2:22–24 (ERV)

Genesis 15:6: Abram believed the Lord, and the Lord accepted Abram’s faith as making him right with God.

James 2:22–24: So you see that Abraham’s faith and the things he did were working together. His faith was made perfect by what he did. This showed the full meaning of the Scripture that says, "Abraham believed God, and God accepted his faith as making him right with him." Abraham was called "God’s friend." So you see that people are made right with God by what they do. They are not made right by faith alone.

Reflection

Hey Gems & Jewels;

Let’s look at the life of Abraham and ask a fundamental question: Why did God call Abraham righteous, and what does a truly yielded or surrendered life produce? Abraham was not called righteous because he lived a perfect life or understood every step ahead. Scripture tells us that he believed God, and his faith was counted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). When God called him to leave what was familiar, Abraham went, trusting the One who had made the promise. His obedience did not earn God’s favor; it grew out of his faith. A yielded life does not always have all the answers, but it listens, trusts, and takes the next step God asks of it. In time, that kind of surrender bears fruit, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of those who come after us.

Scripture tells us in Genesis 15:6 that Abraham simply believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness. Abraham was not declared righteous because he was perfect, nor did he earn his standing through flawless human effort. He was declared righteous because he chose to take God at His Word, trusting God’s word even when the promises seemed impossible.

However, Abraham’s faith did not remain a passive feeling in his heart. When God called him to leave his homeland or step out into the unknown, Abraham moved. His faith was the root, and his obedience was the living fruit. Again, obedience was the evident fruit of his faith.  As James 2 explains, his faith and actions worked together, making his trust complete and earning him the extraordinary title of "God's friend." When you surrender your heart to God, your obedience becomes a living testimony. You step out of legalism and religion and into an intimate, lasting relationship that leaves an eternal legacy for generations to come. Rest your heart today knowing that as you trust and obey, God anchors your life in His righteousness and calls you His friend.

Life Skill Tip

Reflect on your motivation for walking with God this week. Shift your focus from trying to "earn" God's approval through legalistic rules, and instead let your daily obedience flow naturally out of gratitude and trust in His character.

Encouragement Reminder

Whether you or a loved one are currently navigating an unexpected health diagnosis, financial strain, a broken heart, mental health struggles, providing food for your family, the loss of a loved one, or any trial that comes with life’s sudden twists and turns, know that you do not have to fight these battles in your own strength. As you go about your daily routine, managing schedules, fulfilling commitments, and navigating life’s minor or major struggles, remember that God's grace is present to sustain you through every season.

Declarations

My faith is grounded in God's Word, and my obedience shows the depth of my trust.

I am declared right with God through faith, walking closely with Him as His friend.

My surrendered life produces sweet, lasting fruit that honors God and builds a legacy.

Definition of a Declaration

A declaration is a spoken statement of biblical truth spoken out loud in faith to align your mindset, spirit, and actions with God’s Word.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for crediting righteousness to those who put their trust in You. Forgive me for the times I have tried to rely on my own performance rather than resting in Your grace and believing Your promises. Teach me to walk in an active, living faith that honors You through willing obedience. Anchor my heart in Your love so that I may walk closely with You as Your friend in every season. In Jesus' name, Amen.
