The Heart of Devotion, Part 2: Resting in God's Arms

Scripture Focus: John 11:20–27

John 11:20–27 (KJV)

Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in her house. Then said Martha unto Lord, If thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know that, even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, will give it thee. Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto her, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Jesus saith unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were devastatingly dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth carryeth life and believeth in me shall ever die. Believest thou this? She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

John 11:20–27 (NIV)

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" "Yes, Lord," she replied, "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."

John 11:20–27 (ERV)

When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him. Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you anything you ask." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise and live again." Martha answered, "I know that he will rise and live again in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me will live, even if they die. And those who live and believe in me will never truly die. Martha, do you believe this?" Martha answered, "Yes, Lord. I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was coming to live in the world."

Reflection

Hey Gems & Jewels;

In John 11:20–27, Martha meets Jesus while grieving the death of her brother, Lazarus. When she hears that Jesus is approaching, she goes out to meet Him, while Mary remains at home. Her words, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,” show both her sorrow and her confidence in His power to heal. Even in her disappointment, Martha acknowledges that God will give Jesus whatever He asks. When Jesus tells her that her brother will rise again, she understands His promise as a reference to the resurrection at the last day. But Jesus draws her attention to who is standing before her, declaring, “I am the resurrection, and the life.” He reveals that the hope of resurrection rests in Him, not simply in a future event. Before Martha sees any change in her circumstances, she affirms that He is the Christ, the Son of God, showing that faith can remain rooted in who Jesus is even while the heart is grieving.

In the middle of her sorrow and disappointment, Martha runs straight to Jesus. Though her heart carries questions like, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died," her grief doesn't push her away from God; it drives her closer. In response, Jesus offers her one of the most powerful declarations in Scripture: "I am the resurrection, and the life." He shifts her focus away from her immediate pain and anchors her soul in His eternal power and comfort.

Life often brings sudden storms, disappointments, and seasons of grief where our plans fall apart. In those moments, God does not fault you for your honesty or your tears. Instead, He invites you to rest in His loving arms, trading your anxiety and sorrow for His profound peace and comfort. When the weight of the world feels heavy, you can lean entirely upon the One who holds both your present and your eternity.
