Prepared for the Upper Room, Part 4: Discerning the First Drops

Prepared for the Upper Room, Part 4: Discerning the First Drops

Key Scripture: 1 Kings 18:44

1 Kings 18: 24 (KJV)

And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there meareth a cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

1 Kings 18: 24 (NIV)

The seventh time the servant reported, "A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea." So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, ‘Harness your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’"

1 Kings 18: 24 (ERV)

The seventh time the servant came back and said, "I see a small cloud. It is as small as a man's fist, coming up from the sea." Elijah told the servant, "Go tell King Ahab to get his chariot ready and go home now. If he waits, the rain will stop him."

Reflection

Hey Gems & Jewels;

Learning to recognize the early signs of God's movement is one of the most tender invitations of the faith journey. Often, He stirs before He speaks. A quiet shift in circumstance, a verse or that won't leave your mind, a peace that doesn't quite match your situation. These are not coincidences; they are breadcrumbs of His faithfulness, laid out before the full picture comes into view. The challenge, and the gift, is keeping our faith anchored in that in-between space, trusting that what He has begun, He will complete. As Philippians 1:6 reminds us, "He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion." So when you sense that something is shifting, lean in. Hold steady. The manifestation is coming, and the waiting itself is shaping you for it.

After a long, painful season of severe drought, Elijah stood on the mountain expecting rain. He sent his servant to look out toward the sea seven times. Six times the servant returned with nothing to report. But on the seventh time, he spotted a cloud no larger than a human hand. To an untrained eye, a cloud that size in a vast, dry sky seemed insignificant. Yet Elijah recognized it immediately. He did not wait for thunder or a heavy downpour before taking action; he discerned the first drop and prepared for the total overflow.

In your journey toward the upper room, God will often send evidence of breakthrough in small, quiet ways. It might be a minor open door, a slight shift in your perspective, or a subtle sense of peace amidst a storm. It is easy to dismiss these early signs because they do not look like the full answer yet. However, maturity requires us to celebrate the small clouds while keeping our confidence anchored strictly in God. Do not despise small beginnings or early evidence. Recognize that the God who sent the first drop is faithful to send the entire rain.

Life Skill Tip

Create a small evidence journal this week. Write down three subtle ways God has shown up or provided encouraging signs in your life recently, no matter how small they may seem. Purposefully give thanks for those small shifts as acts of expectant faith.

Encouragement Reminder

Whether you or a loved one are currently navigating an unexpected health diagnosis, financial strain, a broken heart, mental health struggles, providing food for your family, the loss of a loved one, or any trial that comes with life’s sudden twists and turns, know that you do not have to fight these battles in your own strength. As you go about your daily routine, managing schedules, fulfilling commitments, and navigating life’s minor or major struggles, remember that God's grace is present to sustain you through every season.

Declarations

I have spiritual discernment to recognize the early signs of God's faithfulness.

I celebrate small beginnings and trust God for the full completion of His promise.

My confidence rests entirely in God, not in the size of my current circumstances.

Definition of a Declaration

A declaration is a spoken statement of biblical truth spoken out loud in faith to align your mindset, spirit, and actions with God’s Word.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for opening my spiritual eyes to see Your goodness in every season. Forgive me for the times I have overlooked small signs of Your grace because I was looking for massive outcomes. Give me the wisdom to discern the early evidence of Your work in my life. Help me to stand firm, take steps of faith, and keep my heart anchored completely in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
