And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.

So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, "Rise and anoint him; he is the one." So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.

Then Samuel asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" Jesse answered, "I still have one more son, my youngest. He is out taking care of the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him. Bring him here. We will not sit down to eat until he gets here." Jesse sent someone to bring his youngest son in. He was a fine looking boy, healthy and handsome. The Lord said to Samuel, "Get up and anoint him. He is the one." Samuel took the horn of oil and poured it on the youngest son in front of his brothers. The Spirit of the Lord came on David with great power from that day on.

Today we are looking at where true preparation takes place, it happens away from the applause, the crowds, and the recognition of others. It is in the quiet, unseen moments that God does His deepest work in us, shaping our character, refining our faith, and making us ready for what He has already prepared. The valley is not a detour; it is the very place where roots grow deep enough to hold us when the winds of life begin to blow.
Scripture reminds us that even David, before he ever stood before a giant, was faithful in the field where no one was watching (1 Samuel 16:7). God sees what others overlook. He honors the hidden yes, the early morning prayer, the private surrender, the obedience no one applauds. Trust the process of preparation, for the One who calls you is also the One who equips you, and He never wastes a season.
Before David was ever crowned king or celebrated in public victory, he was tucked away in the backside of the desert tending his father's sheep. His own family did not even think to invite him to the sacrifice when the prophet Samuel arrived. To human eyes, David was overlooked and forgotten in a low position. Yet, it was in that exact secret place where David learned to trust God, protect his flock, and worship without an audience. God was watching his heart when no one else was paying attention.
Your private faithfulness matters deeply to God. The quiet tasks you perform with excellence, the prayers you pray in secret, and the integrity you maintain when no one is looking are building the foundation for your assignment. God does not need a stage to find you, nor does He need public approval to position you. When it is time for your divine appointment, God will cause the whole room to pause until you are brought into position. Stay faithful in the quiet fields today, knowing that private diligence always precedes public purpose.
